STRUCTURE

Outer Exposed

Entrance Island sits off Nanaimo in DFO subarea 17-11, an outer, exposed rock reef where the bottom drops through 15 to 100 feet. The rock structure holds Rockfish year-round and Lingcod through their spring and summer peak from March into August, both of which respond to jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits worked close to the bottom. Pacific Halibut move over the deeper edges from March to August, where drift jigging with metal jigs or herring covers ground across the depth range. Chinook and Coho Salmon run through the area from June to September, taken by trolling anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, and trolling spoons along the exposed outer water. The mix of rock, depth, and open exposure keeps bottomfish and salmon tactics in play across much of the season.
