STRUCTURE
Drop Off
Outer Exposed

Duval Island sits off Port Hardy on the exposed outer coast of northern Vancouver Island, where a rock drop-off falls through depths of 15 to 225 feet. The structure concentrates Chinook Salmon from May through August and Coho Salmon from June into September, with both species holding along the edge where current meets the wall. Chinook respond to trolling with anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies, while Coho take trolling spoons, cut-plug herring, and flashers over the same ground. Pacific Halibut work the deeper flats and rubble from March through August, taken by drift fishing whole herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid. Lingcod hold tight to the rock through the summer months and come to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked close to the bottom.
