French Creek is a mid-exposure bay on the east coast of Vancouver Island near Qualicum Beach, with a mixed bottom and depths running from 15 to 80 feet. Chinook Salmon hold here through their July to September peak and Coho Salmon run from June into October, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, or hootchies across the bay. Lingcod fishing turns on from January through March, with jigging metal jigs and swimbaits over the mixed bottom producing well, while Black Rockfish stack up from April to September and respond to leadhead jigs and soft plastic swimbaits. Pacific Halibut move through from March to August, worked by drift fishing whole herring, octopus, or large jigs across the deeper edges of the range. The varied structure and moderate depth let anglers work the bottom for lingcod and rockfish or run gear higher in the water column for salmon depending on the season.
