Inner Protected

Halkett Point is an inner-protected bay on the southeast corner of Gambier Island in Howe Sound, sitting within DFO subarea 28-2 with mixed bottom structure and fishable water from about 10 to 60 feet. The point draws Chinook Salmon through their June to August peak and Coho Salmon from June into September, with both species using the shoreline break to hunt bait pushed along the drop. Downrigger trolling is the workhorse here, running anchovy in teaser heads, hootchies, small trolling spoons and flashers tight to the contour where the bottom transitions. When fish hold shallow or bait balls up near the surface, mooching cut plug or whole herring for Chinook and bucktailing flies for Coho both produce along the same edge. Jigging metal jigs or soft plastic swimbaits works the deeper end of the range when salmon stack near structure.
