Angels Gate marks the southern end of the Los Angeles breakwater, a rock structure fishing water from roughly 10 to 60 feet deep along its length. California Halibut hold across the sandy stretches from March through July, best worked by drifting live anchovies, sardines, or smelt, while Barred Sand Bass move onto the same flats in March and again from June through August on drifted baits and swimbaits. The rock and kelp edges hold Calico Bass from April through August, taken on swimbaits and soft plastic grubs, and California Sheephead from April through September on bottom-fished squid, live shrimp, and cut mackerel. Sculpin school over the deeper structure from June through September, responding to dropper loops baited with squid or mackerel strips, and Lingcod take over the cooler months from September into February on vertical jigs and leadhead swimbaits. Leopard Shark cruise the bottom from April through August, drawn to soaked squid and mackerel along the base of the breakwater.
