Lion Rock is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Morro Bay, California, where the bottom falls from around 10 feet down to 90 feet over hard structure. The rockpile holds a strong resident groundfish population, with Lingcod peaking September through March, Blue Rockfish from March through August, and Copper Rockfish from June through September, while Chinook Salmon move through the outer water on their March-to-July peak. Anglers work the deeper edges of the drop-off with jigging and shrimp fly rigs for Lingcod and Blue Rockfish, and fish squid and cut bait along the rock for Copper Rockfish and California Sheephead, which peaks August through October. Salmon runs favor trolling anchovies and herring or flashers with hoochies through the exposed water above the structure. California Halibut show over the sand margins from June through August and take a drift-fished live anchovy or swimbait.
