Los Trancos Canyon sits off Newport Beach as an outer-exposed rocky drop-off, falling through depths of 60 to 300 feet where structure concentrates fish along its edges. Barred Sand Bass peak from May through July and respond to drift fishing with live anchovies, live sardines, or squid strips, while Calico Bass hold from April through August and take plastic swimbaits worked across the rock. California Halibut move through in spring, peaking March through May, and are worked with drifted live bait such as anchovies, sardines, or queenfish along the shallower reaches of the slope. Leopard Shark show from June through August and hold near the bottom, where squid, mackerel, and market shrimp produce, and the deeper rock draws Lingcod from September through January on vertical jigs and heavy iron. Bonito, Barracuda, and Yellowfin tuna work the exposed water above the canyon through the warmer months.
