Redondo Canyon is a deep offshore trench off Newport Beach, California, dropping through waters that run 1,225 to 1,605 feet. The canyon holds a mix of pelagic and deep-dwelling species, including yellowfin tuna that peak from June through October, albacore tuna peaking June through September, bigeye tuna, swordfish, blue shark, shortfin mako shark, sablefish, and Pacific cod. Albacore hold in the upper water column over the canyon edge, where live bait fishing with live sardines and live anchovies works the current lines. Trolling feather jigs, cedar plugs, and skirted trolling lures covers ground to locate scattered schools, and surface iron with jigs takes fish feeding near the top. The steep depth gradient concentrates bait and pelagics along the canyon rim, making the structure the focal point of the fishery.
