60 Mile Bank is an outer, exposed offshore flat southwest of San Diego, where a mud bottom drops through depths of 400 to 520 feet. The bank draws warm-water pelagics through summer and fall, with albacore and yellowfin tuna peaking from June through October alongside bigeye and skipjack tuna. Blue, mako, and common thresher sharks also work these open waters. Anglers target the tuna with live bait, running sardines, anchovies, and mackerel over the bank, and cover water with trolling spreads of cedar plugs, feather jigs, and skirted lures. Surface iron and heavy metal jigs bring fish up over the flat when tuna hold near the surface.
