The 371

The 371 is a deepwater bank off San Diego, California, where the bottom drops through 1,985 to 2,125 feet and holds the structure that concentrates coldwater groundfish. Pacific Halibut moves through from February to July, Lingcod holds from October to February, and Sablefish stays active across a long window running July through February. Rockfish work the same depths nearly year-round, with Pacific Cod, Blue Shark, and Shortfin Mako Shark rounding out the catch. For Sablefish at these depths, deep dropping with squid, mackerel strips, or sanddabs reaches the bottom where they feed, while Rockfish respond to dropper loop bait fishing with squid and mackerel strips. Lingcod along the harder structure take vertical jigging with heavy iron and metal jigs, and Pacific Halibut come to drift fishing with live anchovies and sardines over the shallower edges of the range.
