STRUCTURE

9-Mile Bank is an offshore bank off Santa Monica, California, holding water from 60 to 300 feet across structure that draws both surface and bottom species. Yellowtail run from May through October and respond to live bait such as live sardines, live mackerel, and anchovies, while yo-yo jigging with heavy iron works the deeper reaches. White Seabass move through in the spring window of March to July, taken on live squid and live sardines or on drift-fished dead and cut squid. Calico Bass hold over the shallower structure from April to August and hit swimbaits and soft plastic grubs on leadhead jigs, and rockfish stay available year-round on dropper loops baited with squid, cut mackerel, and shrimp flies. As fall shifts toward winter, lingcod come into play from September through February on metal jigs and leadhead jigs with swimbaits worked vertically along the bottom.
