El Segundo Flats is an outer-exposed sand flat off Santa Monica, California, running 40 to 80 feet deep with an open, structureless bottom that fish work over on moving water. California Halibut anchor the season here, peaking March through July, and drift fishing across the sand with live anchovies, live sardines, or live smelt covers ground efficiently on the flat. Barred Sand Bass follow a similar pattern with peaks in March and again June through August, taking drifted live anchovies and sardines or plastic swimbaits. California Barracuda move through from April to September and respond to trolled tube lures, spoons, and swimbaits, while White Seabass hold from March to July on live squid, sardines, and mackerel. Leopard Shark (April through August) and Calico Bass (April through August) round out the mix, the sharks worked by soaking squid or mackerel on the bottom and the calico taken on swimbaits and soft plastic grubs.
