STRUCTURE
Beach

Santa Monica State Beach's Pier North Stretch is an open sand beach fronting the waters north of the Santa Monica Pier, a shoreline defined by shifting sand flats rather than hard structure. California Halibut hold along these flats through their peak from March to July, while Barred Sand Bass move onto the sand in March and again from June to August. Drift fishing carries both species, working live anchovies, live sardines, or live smelt across the bottom as the current pulls baits over open ground. For Barred Sand Bass, plastic swimbaits and squid on a straight bait presentation extend the coverage, and jigging with leadhead swimbaits or metal jigs picks up fish holding lower in the water column. The sand-dominated seabed rewards drifting across a spread of ground rather than anchoring on a single feature.
