Santa Monica State Beach at the South and Ocean Park section is an open sand beach along the Santa Monica coastline, marked by shifting sandy bottom rather than hard structure. California Halibut hold here through the spring and early summer with a peak from March to July, joined by Barred Sand Bass that run strong in March and again from June through August. Pacific Bonito move along the surf and nearshore water from May to September. Anglers work the halibut by drift fishing live anchovies, sardines, or smelt across the sand, and cover the same water for sand bass with drifted plastic swimbaits or live baits. When bonito school up, live bait chumming with anchovies and sardines pulls them in close, and casting metal jigs or surface irons reaches fish holding farther off the beach.
