About Short Bank

Short Bank sits offshore of Santa Monica, California, where the bottom drops through a depth range of 120 to 350 feet, holding structure that concentrates both bottom species and roaming pelagics. California Halibut work the shallower edges from March through July, while Lingcod hold on the deeper rock from September into February and Vermilion and Sunset Rockfish stay catchable year-round. Yellowtail move through from May to October and White Seabass push in from March to July, with the strongest results coming on live bait such as live sardines, mackerel, and squid drifted through the water column. Vertical jigging with metal jigs and leadhead jigs works the deeper rock for Lingcod, and deep dropping squid strips or shrimp flies puts baits in front of Vermilion Rockfish holding near the bottom. California Sheephead take live shrimp, squid, and cut mackerel fished on the bottom from April through September.
