About Leo Carrillo Kelp

Leo Carrillo Kelp is an outer-exposed kelp reef off Santa Monica, set over rocky bottom in 20 to 60 feet of water. White Seabass moves through the kelp from March into July, overlapping with Calico Bass from April to August and Yellowtail from May through October, while Cabezon holds along the reef from September into April. Working live squid, live sardines, or live mackerel through the kelp targets White Seabass, and yo-yo iron or surface iron pulls Yellowtail off the same structure. Calico Bass hold tight to the rock, where swimbaits, soft plastic grubs, and leadhead jigs worked along the edges produce. For bottom-oriented fish, rockfish jigging with shrimp flies or leadhead jigs with swimbaits reaches Cabezon, and dropper loops with squid strips or cut mackerel bring up Ocean Whitefish through the summer.
