About Barge Reef
Barge Reef is an artificial reef in federal Atlantic waters off Miami, Florida, where the structure holds bottom species and draws pelagic fish into the surrounding water column. Black Grouper and Greater Amberjack hold tight to the reef, while Mutton Snapper peak from April through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid. Above the structure, Dorado run strongest from March through July and fall to trolled rigged ballyhoo, skirted trolling lures, and feathers. King Mackerel take over from November through March, with slow trolling live goggle eyes, live blue runners, or live pilchards as the dominant approach. Wahoo peak from September through December and strike weighted trolling lures, bullet-head lures, and bonito strips pulled on high-speed trolling passes along the reef.
