About Cape Florida
Cape Florida marks the southern tip of Key Biscayne off Miami, where the seafloor falls away along a rocky drop-off into outer, exposed water between 260 and 660 feet deep. Common Snook and Gray Snapper peak here from May through July, while Tarpon reach their best numbers from March through May, with Sheepshead and Crevalle Jack rounding out the species mix. Snook and Tarpon respond to live bait drifting with live pilchards, live shrimp, and live mullet, and casting artificials such as soft plastic swimbaits and bucktail jigs provides a supporting option for both. Gray Snapper hold tight to the rock bottom, where bottom fishing with cut bait, live shrimp, or squid puts baits directly on the structure. Chumming and freelining with live pilchards or glass minnows draws snapper up off the ledge when the bite on the bottom slows.
