About Claughton Island
Claughton Island sits at the mouth of the Miami River in Biscayne Bay, where a rocky drop-off falls away from the shoreline into water ranging from the shallows to about 20 feet. Common Snook and Gray Snapper peak here from May through July, while Tarpon move through in greatest numbers from March to May, and Sheepshead and Crevalle Jack round out the catch along the rock edges. Anglers targeting snook and tarpon favor live bait drifting along the drop-off with live pilchards, live shrimp, or live mullet, letting the current carry baits past the structure where fish hold. Gray Snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut bait, live shrimp, or squid worked tight to the rocky bottom. Casting artificials such as bucktail jigs and soft plastic swimbaits along the ledge covers water efficiently when snook and tarpon are actively feeding.
