About Dodge Island
Dodge Island is a rocky drop-off on Miami's exposed outer edge, where the bottom falls from the shallows to roughly 40 feet. Common Snook, Gray Snapper, and Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July, Mutton Snapper peaks from April through June, and King Mackerel take over from November through March, with Crevalle Jack patrolling the ledge as well. Snook anglers drift live pilchards, live shrimp, live mullet, or live pinfish along the break, while Gray Snapper and Mutton Snapper respond to bottom fishing with cut bait, squid, live pilchards, or live ballyhoo worked tight to the rock. Yellowtail Snapper rise to a chumming program built on frozen chum blocks, glass minnows, and cut ballyhoo, which draws them up off the drop-off. In the cooler months, slow trolling live goggle eyes, live blue runners, or live pilchards along the deeper edge targets passing King Mackerel.
