About Mashta Island

Mashta Island is a rocky drop-off off Miami in the Southeast Region of Florida's Atlantic state waters, where an outer, exposed edge falls away across depths from 260 to 660 feet. Common Snook and Gray Snapper peak from May through July, while Tarpon hit their stride earlier, from March through May. Sheepshead and Crevalle Jack round out the species mix along the hard rock bottom. Live bait drifting with live pilchards, live mullet, or live shrimp along the edge of the drop works for both snook and tarpon. Gray Snapper respond to bottom fishing over the rock with cut bait, squid, or live pilchards, and chumming and freelining glass minnows draws them up off the structure.
