About Railroad Barge Reef
Railroad Barge Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Atlantic waters off Miami, where sunken structure draws both bottom-dwelling and pelagic species. Mutton Snapper peak from April through June, and Greater Amberjack and Black Grouper also hold tight to the reef. Bottom fishing with live pilchards, live ballyhoo, cut bait, or squid works the structure for snapper, while slow-pitch jigs and bucktail jigs tipped with strip bait cover the water column above it. King Mackerel move over the reef from November through March and respond to slow trolling with live goggle eyes and live blue runners. Wahoo peak from September through December and fall to high-speed trolling with weighted trolling lures and bullet-head lures, and Dorado arrive from March through July for anglers trolling rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling lures.
