About Soldier Key
Soldier Key is a small island in southern Biscayne Bay off Miami, Florida, ringed by a shallow sand flat that holds 0 to 10 feet of water with moderate exposure. Common Snook, Gray Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, Mutton Snapper from April through June, and King Mackerel from November through March, while Crevalle Jack round out the mix. Live bait drifting with live pilchards, live shrimp or live mullet across the sand is the dominant approach for snook, and casting topwater plugs or soft plastic jerkbaits over the shallows works as a strong alternative. Gray Snapper respond to bottom fishing with live shrimp or cut bait, and chumming with glass minnows or frozen chum blocks draws Yellowtail Snapper up to the baits. In the cooler months, anglers target King Mackerel by slow trolling live goggle eyes or live blue runners along the deeper edges.
