About Southwest Point
Southwest Point is an outer, exposed rock drop-off off Miami, Florida, where the bottom falls away from 260 to 660 feet within the Florida Atlantic State Waters: Southeast Region. Tarpon peak here from March through May, followed by Common Snook and Gray Snapper, which both peak from May through July, while Sheepshead and Crevalle Jack round out the species list. The rock edge concentrates Gray Snapper, and anglers work it with bottom fishing rigs baited with cut bait, live shrimp, live pilchards, or squid. Live bait drifting along the drop-off is the dominant approach for both Tarpon and Common Snook, using live mullet, live pilchards, and live shrimp, with live crabs added for Tarpon and live pinfish for Snook. Chumming and freelining with glass minnows or cut bait draws Gray Snapper off the rock and up toward drifted baits.
