About Star Island

Star Island is a protected sand flat in Miami, Florida, with depths running from 5 to 15 feet across its inner, sheltered bottom. Common Snook, Gray Snapper, and Yellowtail Snapper all peak from May through July, while Mutton Snapper peak slightly earlier, from April through June, and King Mackerel take over the cooler months from November through March. Crevalle Jack round out the species mix on the flat. Live bait drifting with live pilchards, live shrimp, or live mullet across the sand targets snook, and casting soft plastic jerkbaits or topwater plugs covers the shallower edges. For Gray Snapper and Mutton Snapper, bottom fishing with cut bait, live pilchards, or squid in the deeper 10 to 15 foot range keeps baits where the fish feed.
