About Star Island Reef

Star Island Reef is an artificial reef off Miami, Florida, within the Southeast Region of Florida's Atlantic state waters. The structure draws a snapper-heavy lineup, with Gray Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper peaking from May through July and Mutton Snapper peaking from April through June. Common Snook also peak in the May–July window, while King Mackerel take over from November through March and Crevalle Jack round out the mix. Bottom fishing with live pilchards, live shrimp, cut bait, or squid works the reef for Gray and Mutton Snapper, and chumming with frozen chum blocks and glass minnows pulls Yellowtail Snapper up off the structure. In the cooler months, anglers target King Mackerel by slow trolling live blue runners, live goggle eyes, or live ballyhoo around the reef.
