About West Point

West Point is an exposed rock drop-off off Miami, Florida, where the bottom falls from 15 to 60 feet along the outer edge of the Southeast Region's Atlantic state waters. Tarpon move through from March to May, while Common Snook and Gray Snapper both peak from May through July, with Sheepshead and Crevalle Jack also working the rocky structure. Anglers target snook and tarpon by live bait drifting along the ledge with live pilchards, live mullet, or live shrimp. Gray Snapper hold tight to the rock bottom and respond to bottom fishing with cut bait, squid, or live shrimp. Bucktail jigs and soft plastic swimbaits worked down the face of the drop-off add a second approach for snook and tarpon when the bait is scattered.
