About City Island
City Island is a shallow inshore spot in the Sarasota Bay region of Florida's Gulf state waters, with depths running from the surface to about 10 feet. Common Snook peak from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum in September and October, while Sheepshead round out the resident inshore mix. Spanish Mackerel move through in two windows, March through May and again September through November, and anglers target them by casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs. Snook respond best to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp worked through the shallow water, with paddletail swimbaits and topwater plugs as artificial alternatives. In the skinny water under 10 feet, Red Drum suit sight casting with gold spoons or soft plastic jerkbaits, and Gray Snapper take live shrimp and cut sardines fished on the bottom.
