About De Soto Point
De Soto Point is an exposed drop-off with mixed bottom on the outer edge of the Tampa Bay Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, just north of Sarasota. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper hold strongest from June through August, and Red Drum move through in numbers during September and October, with Sheepshead also among the regular targets. Spanish Mackerel run in two windows, March through May and again September through November, and anglers work them by casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs. The mixed bottom along the drop-off suits bottom fishing for Gray Snapper with live shrimp, live pilchards, cut sardines, or squid, while chumming with live pilchards or frozen chum blocks draws fish up off the edge. Snook respond to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live threadfin herring, and bucktail jigs and paddletail swimbaits work the same structure.
