About Longboat Pass
Longboat Pass is an exposed tidal corridor in the Sarasota Bay region, where a sand bottom runs 10 to 25 feet deep as water moves between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum in September and October, while Sheepshead also hold in the pass. Spanish Mackerel move through in two windows, March through May and September through November, and anglers target them by casting small spoons and jigs. Snook respond to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live threadfin herring drifted along the moving current, and bucktail jigs work the deeper sections of the channel. Gray Snapper come to bottom fishing with live shrimp or cut sardines on the sand, and Red Drum take cut mullet or blue crabs fished the same way.
