About McKay Point
McKay Point is an exposed drop-off on Florida's Gulf coast near Sarasota, within the Tampa Bay Region of state waters, where mixed bottom falls away along an outer edge. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum in September and October, with Sheepshead also among the regular targets. Spanish Mackerel move through in two windows, March through May and again September through November, and anglers take them by casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs along the edge. Snook respond to live bait fishing with live pilchards, pinfish, or threadfin herring worked along the break. Gray Snapper hold tight to the mixed bottom and fall to bottom fishing with live shrimp, cut sardines, or squid.
