About New Pass
New Pass is a sand-bottomed tidal corridor linking Sarasota Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, with depths running 10 to 25 feet through the channel. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum from September into October, while Sheepshead round out the roster of resident species. Spanish Mackerel move through in two runs, March through May and again September through November, and anglers target them by casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs into the moving water. Snook anglers work live pilchards, live pinfish, and live threadfin herring along the channel edges, with bucktail jigs and paddletail swimbaits covering the deeper sand. Gray Snapper respond to bottom fishing with live shrimp and cut sardines, and Red Drum take cut mullet and blue crabs fished on the sandy bottom.
