About Snake Island
Snake Island is a sand-bottom drop-off in the Sarasota Bay region of Florida's Gulf state waters, where an exposed outer edge falls from 10 to 40 feet of water. Common Snook peak here from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through August, and Red Drum move through in strength during September and October. Spanish Mackerel run the area twice a year, from March to May and again from September to November, while Sheepshead round out the resident mix. Live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp worked along the edge of the drop-off produces snook, and bottom fishing with live shrimp, cut sardines, or squid targets the snapper holding in the deeper sand. When mackerel push across the open water, casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs covers the edge efficiently.
