About Southeast Tampa Reef

Southeast Tampa Reef is an artificial reef in the Tampa Bay region of Florida's Gulf state waters, located off St. Petersburg. Sheepshead hold tight to the structure from January through March, and bottom fishing with live fiddler crabs, sand fleas, or live shrimp puts baits directly into the rubble where they feed. Spring brings Spanish mackerel from March through May, when casting small spoons and metal jigs around the reef draws fast strikes, and the fish return again in September and October. Gray snapper peak from May through August and respond to bottom fishing with knocker rigs and live pilchards, while chumming with cut sardines pulls them up off the structure. Common snook move through from April to June, spotted seatrout show in March–April and again in October–November, and red drum close out the summer in August and September, taking live shrimp and cut mullet fished near the reef.
