About Big Reef Hump
Big Reef Hump is a rocky pinnacle off Galveston, Texas, rising from open, exposed water at the outer edge of the Galveston Bay System in 45 to 75 feet of depth. Sheepshead and black drum peak here from January through March, when bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or fresh dead shrimp tight to the rock produces steady bites. Spotted seatrout move onto the hump from March through May and respond to live shrimp or live croaker, as well as soft plastic paddle tails worked on jig heads. Red drum take over from August through October, with drift fishing over the structure using live finger mullet, cut mullet, or live croaker covering the high spots and surrounding bottom. Southern flounder round out the year from September through November, holding along the base of the rock where jigging soft plastic paddle tails or bucktail jigs keeps baits in the strike zone.
