False Bay Kelp Beds sits off San Juan Island in DFO subarea 7, a rocky kelp reef with mid-range exposure and depths running 15 to 60 feet. The structure holds Kelp Greenling from June through December and Rockfish through the spring and summer months, both of which respond to jigging with metal jigs or leadhead jigs and soft plastics over the rock. Lingcod work the same ground with two peak windows, November through February and again March through June, taken on jigging with swimbaits or by drifting live greenling and herring along the reef edges. Coho and Chinook Salmon move through in the summer, with Coho peaking June to October on trolled flashers and hoochies and Chinook from June to September on downrigger-trolled whole herring and spoons. Pacific Halibut hold on the deeper edges from April through August, drifted with herring, squid, or salmon bellies along the bottom.
