Kanaka Bay sits off Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands of Washington, where waters range from 30 to 150 feet deep. The bay holds Chinook Salmon, which peak from June through August, and Coho Salmon, which run strong from June through September. Trolling is the primary approach here, working whole herring, flashers, trolling spoons, and hootchies through the mid-water column for Chinook, and hoochies, spoons, flashers, or cut plug herring for Coho. Anglers also mooch cut-plug or whole herring across the deeper edges, and jig metal jigs when fish hold tight to the bottom. The varied depth range lets anglers adjust their presentation to match where the salmon are staging through the season.
