Kelp Reef sits in the San Juan Channel near Friday Harbor, Washington, a rocky, kelp-covered structure holding water from 20 to 100 feet deep. Lingcod are the standout target, peaking from December through February and again from May through August, while kelp greenling hold through the reef from May into November and aggregate rockfish run strong from March through September. Anglers work the reef primarily by jigging, dropping metal jigs, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, or bucktail jigs down through the water column to reach fish tucked into the rock and kelp. Live bait drifting with greenling, herring, or sanddabs pulls lingcod off the structure, and mooching whole or cut plug herring covers the same ground. For greenling and rockfish, leadhead jigs tipped with soft plastics or shrimp and bottom-fished cut herring work the deeper edges where the reef meets open channel.
