Mackaye Harbor sits along the south end of Lopez Island in Washington's San Juan Islands, a protected inner bay with mixed bottom running from about 10 to 60 feet. Rockfish are the primary target here, with the aggregate fishery peaking from March through September. Jigging drives most of the action, with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits worked over the mixed structure to reach fish holding near the bottom. Bait fishing with herring, squid, or shrimp and mooching with herring or leadhead jigs both fill in as effective approaches across the same depth range. The sheltered exposure keeps conditions workable through much of the peak season.
