Midchannel Bank is a sand flat off Port Townsend in DFO subarea 9, sitting in mid-exposure water that runs 20 to 60 feet deep. The bank draws Pacific Halibut through its March-to-July peak and Lingcod that hold strongest from March into May, with Chinook Salmon moving through from June to August and Coho from June into September. Anglers work the halibut with drift jigging using metal jigs, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, or herring, and shift to bottom bait fishing with salmon bellies, octopus, or squid when the drift slows. Lingcod respond to jigging over the sand with metal jigs and swimbaits, while live greenling or herring covers the fish holding tight to structure. For salmon, mooching cut-plug herring suits the Chinook, and trolling flashers, hoochies, and spoons covers the Coho over the same depths, with English Sole, Rock Sole, Pacific Cod, and Spiny Dogfish rounding out the bottom catch.
