Protection Island sits in the inner protected waters off Port Townsend, Washington, within DFO subarea 6, where a mixed-bottom drop-off falls through depths of 20 to 120 feet. The structure draws Chinook Salmon at their peak from June through August and Coho Salmon from June into September, alongside Pacific Halibut that hold strongest March through July and Lingcod that peak March through May. Chinook respond best to mooching cut-plug or whole herring along the drop-off edge, while Coho are worked through trolling flashers, hoochies, and trolling spoons across the same contour. The deeper reaches over mixed bottom hold Pacific Halibut on drift jigging with metal jigs or herring, and Lingcod on metal jigs and swimbaits worked close to the structure. Black Rockfish and Copper Rockfish stack over the same broken terrain from late spring through summer, taking metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits fished near the bottom.
