Inner Protected

Duwamish Head marks a drop-off along the inner, protected waters of Elliott Bay off Seattle, where a mixed bottom falls away through depths of 40 to 180 feet. The structure concentrates migrating salmon, with Chinook peaking July through September and Coho running strong from June into October, alongside seasonal runs of Pink Salmon. Anglers work the edge of the drop primarily by trolling, running cut-plug herring, whole herring, flashers with hoochies, or trolling spoons across the changing depths. Mooching cut-plug or whole herring along the slope covers the same water at a slower pace, while metal jigs and leadhead jigs reach fish holding deeper on the structure. As current moves along the head, salmon stack against the break where the shallow shelf meets deeper water.
