Scatchet Head sits off the southern end of Whidbey Island in Marine Area 9, where the bottom drops through 50 to 160 feet and forms the kind of structure that holds resident and migrating fish. Lingcod are the year-round draw, peaking in January and again from February through April, and they respond to jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, or bucktail jigs worked close to the bottom. Chinook Salmon move through from July into September, while Coho build from June and hold into October. Both salmon fisheries center on trolling cut-plug herring, whole herring, flashers with hoochies, and trolling spoons across the depth band, with mooching cut-plug or whole herring an option when fish stack up. Drift fishing swimbaits and large soft plastics also produces Lingcod along the deeper edges of the contour.
