STRUCTURE
Bay
Inner Protected

Commencement Bay is an inner, protected bay on the Tacoma waterfront in Washington, sitting inside the sheltered waters where the city meets Puget Sound. The bottom here is predominantly mud, and depths range from about 10 to 60 feet across the flats and channels. Its protected exposure keeps the surface calmer than the open sound, and the soft mud bottom shapes how fish hold and move through the bay. The shallower margins and deeper cuts give anglers a range of water to work within that 10-to-60-foot band. As a whole, the bay offers structured, accessible water framed by the surrounding urban shoreline.
