Inner Protected

The Nisqually Flats sit at the mouth of the Nisqually River delta in south Puget Sound near Tacoma, a broad muddy flat inside protected inner waters running from the shallows out to about 30 feet. Chum Salmon dominate the fall run with a peak from September through December, while Chinook Salmon build through summer with a June to September window and Coho Salmon push through from July into October. Cutthroat Trout hold across the flats through much of the year. Trolling works the shallow depth range here for all three salmon, with flashers and hoochies, trolling spoons, and cut-plug herring covering the main tactics. Anglers also mooch cut-plug and whole herring or jig with metal and leadhead jigs when fish stack over the softer bottom.
