The Point Defiance Park Fishing Pier in the Les Davis area sits along Tacoma's shoreline in DFO subarea 11, offering shore-based access to the salmon migrations moving through this stretch of Puget Sound. Chinook Salmon run strongest from June through September, followed by Coho Salmon peaking July through October and Pink Salmon in their July through September window, while Chum Salmon carry the season into December with peaks from September onward. Trolling with cut-plug herring, flashers, trolling spoons, and hoochies covers the water for Chinook and Coho as fish travel past the pier. During pink runs, small trolling spoons, pink hoochies, and dodgers match the smaller salmon moving through in summer. Jigging with metal jigs and leadhead jigs works the water column when fish hold near the structure, and mooching cut-plug or whole herring gives a slower presentation across all four species.
