STRUCTURE

Outer Exposed

Leadbetter Point Grounds is an outer-exposed sand flat off Westport, Washington, running across depths of 30 to 90 feet. The open, featureless bottom holds Dungeness Crab, which peaks from September through January, alongside Chinook and Coho Salmon that both run strongest from June through September. Crabbers work the sand with crab pots baited with chicken, fish carcasses, clams, or squid, while ring nets baited with fish carcasses, clams, or squid serve the shallower end of the range. Salmon anglers troll whole herring, anchovies, trolling spoons, and hoochies for Chinook and switch to cut-plug herring, spoons, hoochies, and flashers for Coho. Mooching with whole or cut-plug herring and jigging with metal jigs work the same water when trolling slows.
