Cree Island sits off Bamfield on the outer coast of British Columbia, an exposed kelp reef built over rock structure in 20 to 80 feet of water. Lingcod hold on the reef year-round with peaks from February through April and again from July through September, working best on jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, or leadhead jigs, or on live greenling and herring worked close to the rock. Chinook Salmon move through from May to August and respond to trolling anchovy, herring, flashers, and hootchies, while Coho Salmon run May into September and take trolling spoons and hootchies along the same edges. Rockfish gather across the reef from May through September and come to jigs and leadhead-rigged soft plastics fished near the bottom. The outer-exposed setting keeps current moving over the structure, concentrating fish along the kelp margins and rock ledges.
