Diplock Island sits off Bamfield on the outer coast of British Columbia, a kelp-covered rock reef exposed to open water where depths run from 20 to 80 feet. Chinook Salmon hold along this structure from May through August, while Coho Salmon move through the same water from May into September. Trolling anchovy, herring, flashers, and hootchies covers the reef edges for Chinook, and the same species responds to mooching whole or cut-plug herring over the rock. For Coho, trolling hootchies, spoons, cut-plug herring, and flashers works the upper water column, with bucktailing and drift jigging as alternatives when fish sit tight to the kelp. The mix of exposed reef and steady depth transitions concentrates both species across the peak summer months.
