Defender Shoal is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle off Campbell River, British Columbia, rising through depths of 30 to 150 feet. The structure holds Chinook Salmon at their peak from June through August and Coho Salmon from May through September, with trolling spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring working the water column above the rock. Lingcod concentrate on the pinnacle itself, peaking May through June and again from August into September, and respond to metal jigs, leadhead jigs with swimbaits, and bucktail jigs worked close to the bottom. Pacific Halibut range across the deeper edges from April through September, taken on drift-jigged leadheads and swimbaits or baited with whole herring and octopus. Black Rockfish and other rockfish species hold tight to the rock through the summer, hitting metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits.
